Why are we so impressed with the "Blackouts"?
March 02, 2007
This spring UVA Instruments was the first to test-ride the "Blackouts" - brand-new active pickups from Seymour Duncan, and to spark artists' interest in them. Read Alejandro's first impressions below.
When Patrick Kirshtner of Seymour Duncan artist relations called me to let me know about these brand-new pickups, I was a little skeptical since I used active pickups by another company in the past, which I've been very happy with. Until we tested the prototypes, both a 6- and a 7-string version. The pickups delivered less hum, more lows and highs, sound that was both round and detailed; the scale runs sound smooth, and arpeggios - uniform. The major difference is that the "Blackouts" have a balance input which makes them very quite. Needless to say, I was so impressed with the quality of the sound, that I called Dino Cazares and Ramon Ortiz to check them out. The results? Dino has switched to using the "Blackouts" in the middle of finishing recording "Bleed the Fifth" with his new band "Divine Heresy", and Ramon Ortiz of Ankla is doing the same. We are very proud to have the privilege of testing these prototypes, and we now use and recommend "Blackouts" as a choice in our family of instruments. I have to yet do a recording to show all the wonderful things I can now play, but I can say this: "Blackouts" were made for metal; and I am, for once, very pleased.

The Ultimate Guide to guitar and Bass Gear 2006 will hit the stands on the week of December 12, 2006. UVA Instruments will appear in the guitar section with model Scorpio.
Thor, Memnock signature model
We are proud to announce that our family of artists just got bigger. Our lates artist is Memnock - bass player of Norwegian band Susperia and he has just received his very own signature model Thor - fretless 32-fret bass. Susperia has just released their new EP "Devil May Care", which has entered the Norwegian TOP 20 Chart in October 2005 and became the first metal album from Norway in the history of the chart.
Currently you can see Susperia and Thor on their
European tour. Memnock was really thrilled
to receive his bass just in time and according to him ...it is a beauty! This is the nicest bass I've ever seen..!
. The
hight quality photos of Memnock and his Thor bass are coming soon, but in the mean time, you can find
some live photos taken by Mattias Jarhag here.
Our custom work appeared in Roadrunner video
We were both surprised and thrilled to find out that one of our custom painted guitars appeared in video for The End - one of the tracks from the latest "Roadrunner United - All-Star Sessions" anniversary album. UVA Instruments was providing technical support at the Hollywood recording session with captain Dino Cazares and other renowned metal artists from bands like Slipknot, Machine Head, Soulfly, Sepultura and others.
In addition to UVA Instruments being mentioned on the album credits, Alex also appears several times in the bonus DVD part of the album. You can read more about the Roadrunner All-Star Sessions, watch the video or buy the album on Amazon.com. More screenshots in our appearances section.
